What is Liposuction ?

Liposuction is a surgical procedure mainly used to correct deep and superficial fat accumulations and remodel the body contour.

Liposuction procedure is based on removing fat via vacuuming with a thin tube, called a cannula. Liposuction is used to remove fat from those areas which are not responding to diet and exercise.

Liposuction surgery is not a method for weight loss, it's a procedure of removing fat from very specific areas such as hips, belly, thighs, buttocks, back, arms, and under the chin or face to improve their shape.

Sometimes liposuction is combined with other surgeries like abdominoplasty, face lift, breast augmentation, tummy tuck, mommy makeover etc...

Liposuction procedure is used for restoration to create more fullness by transferring the purified fat as fillers to the areas like face, butt, breasts etc...

Tummy Tuck vs. Lipo?

Tummy tuck and liposuction are two different surgical procedures that aim to make your stomach appear flatter, tighter, and smaller.

Liposuction removes fat cells and relies on soft tissue elasticity for ultimate contour, while tummy tuck removes skin and fat.

Sometimes these two procedures will be considered together at a single operation to get the best result.

How Is Liposuction Performed?

Liposuction surgery may vary due to many factors such as the patients preference, amount and type of fat to be removed, and according to the surgeons opinion.

In general all types of liposuction is performed under local anesthesia and intravenous sedation (for a small area) or general anesthesia.

All the procedures have in common is the use of a cannula connected to a vacuum to suct the fat out of the body. The procedure takes an hour or two depending on how many areas of the body youre getting done.

There are mainly 5 type of liposuction procedures;

Tumescent Liposuction is the most common technique.  In this procedure your surgeon will inject a sterile solution into the area where the fat is to be removed.

Solution generally contains a mixture of lidocaine, epinephrine and salt solution. The solution liquifies the fat to become swollen, firm, and easier to remove.

After injecting solution your surgeon makes small incisions around the area and inserts cannula. With back and forth movement sucks the fat.

Tumescent liposuction takes between 30 minutes to 4 hours according to the area operated. This method is used for: full body liposuction, male liposuction, back liposuction, hip liposuction, liposuction abdomen, men liposuction and women liposuction.

Laser Assisted Liposuction which includes SmartLipo, uses a laser to produce energy in order to liquefy the fat. This technique means lesser bleeding, bruising and inflammation to the patient.

Power Assisted Liposuction; uses a cannula attached to an oscillating handpiece, operated mechanically. Your surgeon makes small incisions and removes fat quickly. This is a fast and more efficient method than suction-assisted liposuction.

Ultrasound Assisted Liposuction is exposed to sound waves which cause the cells to rupture and liquify. This procedure is efficient and causes the least trauma as compared to the other methods.

VASER liposuction is a surgical fat-removal procedure that uses vibration amplification of sound energy at resonance vibration.

It can be performed on a range of areas, full body liposuction, male liposuction, back liposuction, hip liposuction, liposuction abdomen, men liposuction and women liposuction, chin liposuction.

VASER liposuction is also an excellent procedure for gynecomastia treatment (male liposuction, men liposuction).

Weight Loss Expectations After Liposuction?

Realistic results after liposuction can be seen after six months. Youll continue healing and seeing better results for up to a year.

Taking results after liposuction takes a long-term. Most patients will see early signs of their ultimate liposuction results with in one to three months after surgery.

For the first few weeks after surgery there is postoperative swelling. Swelling will improve during 6 weeks to 6 months but till that time period results will be disguised initially by swelling.

After 6 months to a year you will notice an improved body contour immediately.

How Long Results Last After Liposuction?

There is a finite number of fat cells in our body. Each fat cell acts as storage for whatever fat molecule circulates in the body.

If there are less fat cells in one area after liposuction fewer fat cells will accumulate in that region. Results are permanent if the patient has a healthy diet and lifestyle. But if this balance is off, one may either gain or lose weight after liposuction.
