What is Blepharoplasty (Eyelid Surgery) ?

What is Blepharoplasty (Eyelid Surgery)?

Blepharoplasty is the surgery that is performed to give the patient a fresh and younger look by tightening and lifting the saggy eyelid skin. The surgery is also known as eyelid lift or eyelid surgery. Blepharoplasty can be done on upper lids or for lower lids separately or both at the same time. The procedure can also be performed with eyebrow lift.

Why Is Blepharoplasty Done?

Due to genetic factors, aging and environmental factors can cause deformation around the eye. As the person starts aging, fat cells around eyelids start to accumulate while the muscles tend to weaken which causes droopy eyelids and eyebrows.

Saggy eyelids or eyebrows are not only an aesthetic problem it also affects the vision besides looking ages and tired. Blepharoplasty can be done due to the cosmetic or medical reasons. Edema or an eye allergy can also cause puffy eyes which causes sagging eyelids.

What Is The Procedure Of An Eyelid Surgery?

Eyelid Surgery is performed under intravenous sedation or general anesthesia. The incision lines for eyelid surgery are made through the natural structures of the eyelid region. This will help the resultant scars to be well concealed.

The upper eyelid surgery starts with an incision in the natural crease on the eyelid. After the incision your surgeon will remove or reposition fat deposits, tighten muscles and remove excess skin.

Lower eyelid surgery starts with an incision just below the lower lash line. Through this incision, your surgeon will remove the excess skin in the lower eyelid. Also he or she can reposition or remove the excess fat.

There is also an alternate procedure of an eyelid surgery performed through a transconjunctival incision, created on the inside of the lower eyelid. This procedure is an alternate technique to correct lower eyelid conditions and redistribute or remove excess fat. With this technique, no skin is removed.

After the surgery is done due to the selected procedure your surgeon will close the eyelid incisions with sutures or skin glue. Sutures will be removed within one week.

  • Recovery time after eyelid surgery is comfortable. Within and around a week you will be able to turn back to normal life.
  • It helps to improve vision as excess, loose skin around eyes may impair vision.
  • It corrects lower eyelid droopiness

Cons of Eyelid Surgery
  • To go back to work or your daily life you will need 4-7 days of downtime,
  • You may find difficulty in closing your eyes.
  • Swelling, bruising, and dryness are the most common side effects.
  • You may feel dry and itchy eyes after surgery.
  • You may need to have the repetitive surgery after a few years, as this surgery doesn’t stop eyes from aging.
  • It may damage the underlying structure of the eye as the anatomy around the eye is delicate.

How Long Does It Take The Heal After Eyelid Surgery?

Each patient is different so the healing differs from person to person. After the Eyelid surgery, it's recommended to take 7-10 day off from work and do nothing but relax at home, rest, and begin to recover. Swelling and bruising are unavoidable. Most bruising resolves within 10-14 days. Swelling will start usually 1-2 days after the eyelid surgery but in the first 7-10 days it will resolve quickly.

After about six weeks you will start to see the final result of your eyelid surgery. At this stage, some very mild residual swelling may still be visible as the delicate tissues and muscles around the eye adjust to the surgery. After the healing your surgeon may also suggest use of a laser or chemical peel to reduce discoloration of the lower eyelids.
