The oldest patient I had hair transplantation with was a 78-year-old male. He suffered hair loss in the left ear area as a result of an infection caused by a stone on his head in his childhood.

The procedure performed in this particular patient also yielded successful results.

Hair Transplantation Age

Hair loss is a very common problem experienced by both men and women. Worldwide, 50% of women and 60% of men of all age groups frequently experience hair loss problems.

According to the results of a study conducted by the American Hair Loss Association, most of the man have hair loss problems before the age of 35.

In the worst-case scenarios, hair loss can also affect men in their early 20s. Although baldness affects people of all age groups, losing hair in their 20s can be a little worrying.
female hair lossMost cases of hair loss can be attributed to male / female pattern baldness, which is mainly caused by hormonal changes or genetics, i.e. having a family history of baldness.

Losing hair quality with hair loss problems at a young age greatly affects the appearance of the person and creates self-confidence problems in the person.

For this reason, most people who experience this condition can see hair transplantation as a treatment option.

At What Age is Hair Transplant Done?

According to the information given by hair transplant specialists, it is not appropriate for men who are in their early 20s to have a hair transplant surgery. Because at this age, testosterone levels in the body are not constant.

DHT, the main component responsible for male pattern baldness, does not fully develop until the age of 25. For this reason, it is best to wait until the age of 25 before having a hair transplant.

During the hair restoration process, the surgeon removes hair follicles from the donor area with individual hair follicles (FUE) or a whole scalp strip from an area of the head with healthy hair growth (FUT).

These follicles are divided into units and transplanted into the balding section. Over time, the cuts in the scalp improve and the follicles allow new hair to grow.

The grafting process depends on the severity of the hair loss to keep it looking natural.

However, the situation is different for female patients. Sibel Ulusan MD recently announced that she had a hair transplant procedure for a 9-year-old girl and that they achieved successful results from the procedure.

For some congenital reasons, this procedure may be appropriate for women at a younger age.

But "At what age is hair transplantation done?" and more questions must be answered with an expert opinion and approval.

Should I Wait to Have a Hair Transplant?

When young patients begin to lose hair, they may want to have a hair transplant. In such cases, having a hair transplant can be seen as a good option.

However, young patients should understand that the transplanted hair will remain stable and that after a while, hair loss is progressive.

Over the years, while the transplanted hair remains a permanent strip, more hair loss may occur. This gives young patients an unnatural appearance and these patients may want to repeat the hair transplant procedure.

If hair loss continues over time, donor hair cannot maintain a natural hair growth pattern. For this reason, the early 20s may not be the right time for hair transplantation.

Young people who are concerned about hair loss can be pre-transplanted to increase their hairline density. However, as age progresses, more procedures may be required.
