Dr. Murat Ayata: “There are many benefits of having Otoplasty at a young age”

Otoplasty, that is, prominent ear correction, is an operation that corrects the prominent ear problem that many children and even adults suffer from, and offers a permanent solution to ear deformities. Unlike most surgeries, we see that ear aesthetics are routinely performed on children.

ENT Specialist  Murat Ayata MD gave information to Newme about what happened to the prominent ear, its diagnosis and treatments:

“Otoplasty is an operation that can improve the appearance of the ears and solve the prominent ear or asymmetry problem.

Although the surgery addresses various aesthetic ear problems, the most common purpose of the surgery is to bring the protruding, prominent ears closer to the head.

Prominent ear surgery can also reduce the size of overly large ears or resolve congenital ear deformities. Results look very natural and are normally permanent.

Ears complete their development around the age of four or five and can be done at any time after these ages, but there are many benefits of having prominent ear surgery at a young age. Because it contributes to the self-confidence of children.

By opting for early otoplasty, parents can reduce the potential psychological and emotional harm that cruel teasing to the child can cause.

Ideal Candidates For Prominent Ear Surgery

Patients who are no longer ashamed of their ears often find themselves more comfortable in social situations after surgery.

Ideal candidates for otoplasty, prominent ear aesthetics are children and adults who are dissatisfied with their protruding, large or misshapen ears.

Candidates must be of a healthy, non-smoker profile and, in the case of children, their ears must be fully developed.

Children Must Be Emotionally Ready

Otoplasty can be performed under general anesthesia or sedation. The surgeon makes an incision behind each ear.

These incisions hide small scars in the natural folds of the ears, reducing the amount of visible scarring. After the incisions are made, the ears are reshaped according to the patient's needs.

Ear Cartilage Can Also Be Interfered With

ear cartilageIn some cases, the ear cartilage is intervened and it can be bent towards the head by placing it in the correct position with permanent sutures.

In other cases, the cartilage may need to be completely removed.

Otoplasty is a very fast surgery and the procedure can be completed in an average of 1 hour.

Immediately after the operation, a bandage is placed around the ears of the patients. After a few days, this bandage is replaced with a lighter headband.

After prominent ear surgery, there may be some swelling, numbness, redness and sometimes pain or throbbing in the ear area.
